Introduction:

Welcome back to the final installment of our blog series on conscious breathing. In this article, we’ll guide you through practical steps to integrate conscious breathing into your daily practice as an educator, promoting emotional resilience for both yourself and the children you support.

 

Step 1: Self-Reflection and Awareness

Begin by taking a few moments each day to sit in a quiet space. Close your eyes, bring your attention to your breath, and simply observe its rhythm. As you do this, notice any emotions that arise. This practice of self-reflection and awareness lays the foundation for emotional regulation.

 

Step 2: The Heart-Centred Breath

One effective conscious breathing technique is the Heart-Centred Breath. Place your hand on your heart and take slow, deep breaths through your nose. As you inhale, visualize breathing in calmness and positivity. With each exhale, release any tension or negativity. This practice fosters emotional balance and resilience.

 

Step 3: Breath-Body Connection

Teach children to connect with their breath by using playful imagery. Invite them to pretend their breath is a balloon. As they inhale, the balloon inflates; as they exhale, it deflates. This simple activity not only engages their imagination but also helps them understand the breath-body connection.

 

Step 4: Mindful Moments

Incorporate mindful breathing moments into your daily routines with the children. Before transitioning between activities, guide them through a short breathing exercise. Encourage them to notice how their breath feels and how it affects their bodies. This practice promotes self-awareness and emotional regulation.

 

Step 5: Breathe and Share

Create a dedicated space in your classroom where children can go to practice conscious breathing. This could be a cosy corner with cushions or a designated quiet time. Encourage them to share how they feel before and after their breathing practice, fostering open communication.

 

Step 6: Group Breathing Circle

Gather the children in a circle and lead them through a group breathing exercise. Use visual cues like a soft toy rising and falling with each breath to make it engaging. This activity not only reinforces conscious breathing skills but also enhances a sense of community and togetherness.

 

Step 7: Reflect and Discuss

Engage children in discussions about their conscious breathing experiences. Ask questions like, “How did you feel during the breathing exercise?” or “Did you notice any changes in how you felt afterward?” These conversations help them become more attuned to their emotions and the impact of conscious breathing.
